What is a Periodontal Specialist?

At Wilmington Periodontics & Implant Center you will work with a group of doctors who serve eastern North Carolina. We provide care for individuals, so our approach to oral health is a practice dedicated to you, the patient. Our goal is to help to save teeth and creating a comprehensive plan for the long term. Periodontology or Periodontics is a surgical specialty that includes the placement of dental implants, periodontal plastic surgery including gum and bone grafting, and the treatment of all gum diseases and oral medicine. It also includes the treatment of dental implants that have become infected or have lost bone since their original placement. We are dedicated to the evaluation of your oral health - think of it as a check up from the neck up - and then we work together to treat any necessary concerns or needs.

More information on Periodontist, Periodontics, and Implant Dentistry:

A periodontist is a doctor who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, as well as in the diagnosis and treatment of dental implants and anesthesiology. Periodontists receive additional and extensive residency training in these areas. These include additional years of education beyond dental school. With specific training in the treatment of periodontal disease and implant dentistry, they are experts in the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease as well as oral health. They are also trained in the latest cosmetic periodontal plastic surgery and oral rehabilitation procedures.

Periodontists treat cases ranging from mild gingivitis to more severe cases of periodontal disease. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (the cleaning of infected root surfaces), root surface debridement (the removal of damaged tissue), and regenerative procedures (the reversal of lost bone and tissue). Periodontists can also perform surgical procedures for patients with severe gum disease. Additionally, periodontists are expertly  trained in the placement, maintenance and repair of dental implants.
